“The Neymar We Want Hasn’t Arrived Yet” – Santos Coach Calls for Patience with Former Al Hilal Star

Brazilian Star Plays First Full Match Since Injury in October 2023

Santos manager Pedro Caixinha has defended Neymar following a disappointing performance in his first start since returning to the club. The Brazilian star struggled in Santos’ 0-0 draw against Novorizontino, failing to make a significant impact on the game.

What Happened?

  • Neymar returned to Santos in January after ending his spell with Al Hilal in the Saudi Pro League.
  • He started for the first time since his comeback, playing 75 minutes before being substituted for Gabriel Pontempo.
  • The forward failed to register a shot on target, made just one successful dribble out of eight attempts, and missed all three of his attempted crosses.
  • Multiple media outlets rated him as the worst player on the pitch, highlighting his lack of match fitness and sharpness.

Santos Coach Calls for Patience

Despite the underwhelming display, Pedro Caixinha urged fans to remain patient, emphasizing that Neymar needs more game time to regain his form and physical condition.

“The Neymar we all want—himself included—needs consistency in matches. He has to go through a planned sequence of games to regain his rhythm. That’s the most important thing.”

He also revealed that Neymar was originally scheduled to play 60 minutes, but due to his match positioning and the flow of the game, the coaching staff extended his time to 75 minutes.

“Does this mean he’s back to full match fitness? No, not yet. He’s coming off nearly two years without consistent playing time.”

Caixinha Highlights Neymar’s Fighting Spirit

Despite the lackluster performances, Caixinha praised Neymar’s determination, particularly in Santos’ recent games against Botafogo and Novorizontino.

“He has great desire and a strong willingness to play. That’s something everyone can see.”

What’s Next for Neymar?

Neymar and Santos are now preparing for a highly anticipated match against Corinthians in Round 9 of the Paulista Championship.

Santos currently sit third in Group B with nine points, hoping to secure a place in the next stage of the tournament.
